Agile Consultant - Canberra Australia

Full Time. Permanent. $150K-$190K package, based on your experience in agile roles.

Do you have a passion for servant leadership, continuous improvement and helping agile teams and whole programs reach their true potential? Would you like to drive real change in some of the most challenging scaled agile environments in the Asia-Pacific?

What we're looking for

Zen Ex Machina (ZXM) is looking for an Agile Consultant in Canberra Australia to join one of our Consultant Scrum Teams.

Deep, applied, agile experience

You need more than just a few certifications and not a reverse engineering of your project management experience on LinkedIn as "agile project management".

Passion about improving people's work lives

You need to be passionate about driving agile cultural and behavioural change, practice adoption, to ultimately improve the work lives of our customers.

Team players

We have no "managers". We're looking for people who can work in a Scrum Team and use Scrum with our other consultants to deliver value to clients as a team. If you know and love Scrum, this is how our entire organisation works.

Get "hands on"

This isn't a "sit back and impart your wisdom" job. This is a very hands-on role. It requires you to be active in investigating teams' agile competency, and using Scrum to drive improvements through a backlog of agile coaching activities owned by one of our Product Owners.

Understand government in Canberra

You need to have an understanding of the machinery of government, APS culture, and the challenges of creating change within a traditional corporate management hierarchy. If you're an EL1 or EL2 with agile experience then this role might be for you.

We have a reputation for a very high standard of work. You'll need to be precise and up-to-date in your agile terminology, be able to write to team-level and executive audiences, and work to a very high Definition of Done for consultant deliverables like reports.

What we expect from you

  • A strong reputation, and high standing, in the local and national agile community.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to agile by living our values.
  • An agile mindset, appreciating the benefit of constants, iterations, and continuous improvement.
  • A learning mindset, engaging in self-directed learning as part of your professional development.

In this role you will get to

  • Foster a world-class agile culture with our clients.
  • Work with some of the most experienced and well-known agile practitioners in Australia.
  • Teach, coach, train and mentor teams, programs and their leadership to be agile.
  • Review teams and large programs’ agile capability maturity using ZXM’s Agile IQ® framework and tools.
  • Work hands-on with client teams to help them plan and implement improvements to their agile capability maturity.
  • Contribute to and write reports to executive and senior management audiences to communicate the effectiveness of our agile coaching.
  • Contribute to ZXM’s internal operations to help promote what we do, including through client engagement, sales, social media, developing internal IP, presenting at conferences, and organising local meetups.

What experience do you need?

We’re looking for people with deep, applied agile experience.

Serving as an organisational leader in a capacity other than as a coach, and serving as a solo Scrum Trainer in a classroom setting without a specific client focus, does not count as agile coaching experience.

  • 5+ years’ experience leading agile delivery in an agile role using Scrum, Lean and/or Kanban frameworks and associated industry best practices.
  • 3+ years’ experience in consulting a consulting firm – with a focus on IT strategy, technology or business.
  • 3+ years’ experience in one or more of the following roles: Scrum Master, Product Owner, SAFe® Release Train Engineer (RTE), SAFe® Product Manager, Chief Scrum Master, Chief Product Owner. Being an “agile project manager” doesn’t count. We’re looking for hands-on experience in an actual agile role.
  • 2+ years’ experience in one of the following areas: mentoring (including specialist technical, business and agile roles, teams, managers and executives), training, lean leadership, facilitation, agile/Lean change, and team dysfunction.
  • Demonstrated experience in driving agile transformations from design to implementation, particularly from the perspective of organisational, psychological and behavioural change.
  • Demonstrated success in delivering and facilitating small scale workshops, facilitation and/or formal training.
  • Certifications from, Scrum Alliance, and SAFe®, and demonstrated experience in their associated roles, are highly desirable.

We’re looking for people with deep, applied agile coaching experience. Serving as an organisational leader in another capacity than as coach, and serving as a solo Scrum Trainer in a classroom setting without a specific client focus, does not count as agile coaching experience.

About our team

What does working with a ZXM Consultant Scrum Team look like?

Love a challenge

The team never shy away from hard work. Change is hard. Change at scale is even harder. Seniors help juniors by working in a Scrum Team of consultants.

Work to change workplace behaviour

Our goal is to improve people's way of working, not improve our egos and embed ourselves permanently into a client site.

Always learning

Agile is always changing, so whether its formal learning or researching new techniques, the team is always growing its knowledge.

Work at scale

The ZXM team works across dozens of client teams. There's no "my team". They triage issues and tackle them through working to a backlog.

About our benefits

To support you at work (and play) we offer some great perks: up to 5 weeks off to relax and recharge, an annual allowance to support your learning and growth, a mobile data allowance, a laptop to support mobility across multiple client sites and discounts on certification.

We're serious about diversity

We believe that people’s unique contributions drive ZXM’s success. This is why we never discriminate on the basis of race, religion, national origin, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, age, or marital, veteran, or physical or mental disability status. We’re stronger together.
