Agile Consultant - Canberra Australia

Full Time. Permanent. $160K-$190K package, based on your experience in agile roles.

Do you have a passion for servant leadership, continuous improvement and helping agile teams and whole programs reach their true potential? Would you like to drive real change in some of the most challenging scaled agile environments in the Asia-Pacific?

What's the role?

Zen Ex Machina (ZXM) is looking for an Agile Consultant in Canberra Australia to join one of our Consultant Scrum Teams. As a consultant, you’ll have three jobs to do:

Careers - Roles 2020-05-18 - Thought Leader

What experience do you need?

ZXM’s consultants are master practitioners of agile, scale, and digital transformation. You’ll need over 10 years of experience in agile, not including roles where you’re a “manager”. Importantly, we work at scale – across dozens of programs and teams. You need to know how to navigate a corporate bureaucracy, mentor and guide program leadership, and engage with executives.

What we expect from you

  • A strong reputation, and high standing, in the local and national agile community.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to agile by living our values.
  • An agile mindset, appreciating the benefit of constants, iterations, and continuous improvement.
  • A learning mindset, engaging in self-directed learning as part of your professional development.
  • Be self-organising.
  • Work as a team as part of our Consultant Scrum Team, taking directions from the ZXM Product Owner, and working to optimise its agility with the ZXM Scrum Master.

What skills do you need to have?

Understand government

You must have an understanding of the unique complexities and constraints of working with the public service, its strong hierarchical culture, and how to influence through expert and referent power.

Deep, applied, agile experience

You need more than just a few certifications to be an agile coach. We're not looking for career project managers, iteration managers, or delivery managers. We're looking for career agilists.

Team players

Our entire organisation operates using Scrum. We work across sites in consultant Scrum Teams, so you must be a team player and not operate like a lone contractor, a capability lead, or a project manager.

Quality

We have a reputation for a very high standard of work. You must be precise and up-to-date in your agile terminology, be able to write to team-level, program- and and executive audiences.

Passion about improving people's work lives

You need to be passionate about driving agile cultural and behavioural change, practice adoption, to ultimately improve the work lives of ZXM's customers.

Get "hands on"

This isn't a "sit back and impart your wisdom" job. This is a very hands-on role. It requires you to be active in supporting programs' agile competency, and using Scrum to drive valued outcomes.

What will you get to do?

  • Foster a world-class agile culture with our government and non-government clients.
  • Work at scale. Big scale. We work across dozens of clients, programs, and teams.
  • Work with some of the most experienced and well-known agile practitioners in Australia.
  • Teach, coach, train and mentor teams, programs and their leadership, to be agile.
  • Review teams and large programs’ agile capability maturity using ZXM’s Agile IQ® framework and tools.
  • Work hands-on with client teams to help them plan and implement improvements to their agile capability maturity using our Agile IQ® coaching framework.
  • Contribute to and write reports to executive and senior management audiences to communicate the effectiveness of our agile coaching.
  • Contribute to ZXM’s internal operations to help promote what we do, including through client engagement, sales, social media, developing internal IP, presenting at conferences, and organising local meetups.

About our team

What does working in our ZXM Consultant Scrum Team look like?

Work at scale

The ZXM team works across dozens of client teams. There's no "my team". You'll triage issues and tackle them with others through working to a backlog.

Love a challenge

The team never shy away from hard work. Change is hard. Change at scale is even harder. Seniors help everyone by working in a Scrum Team of consultants.

Work to change workplace behaviour

Our goal is to improve people's way of working, not improve our egos and embed ourselves permanently into a client site.

Always learning

Agile is always changing, so whether its formal learning or researching new techniques, the team is always growing its knowledge. We expect the same from you.

About our benefits

To support you at work (and play) we offer some great perks: up to 5 weeks off to relax and recharge, an annual allowance to support your learning and growth, a mobile data allowance, a laptop to support mobility across multiple client sites, and discounts on Scrum.org certification.

We're serious about diversity

We believe that people’s unique contributions drive ZXM’s success. This is why we never discriminate on the basis of race, religion, national origin, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, age, or marital, veteran, or physical or mental disability status. We’re stronger together.
