Finding a sense of purpose in either the work itself or the output is important for team effectiveness. While the meaning of work is personal, helping the team succeed is an expression of a shared purpose.

Dan Pink’s research highlights that purpose — the desire to do something that has meaning and is important — is vital to organisations, from teams through to their leaders. He warns that companies that only focus on profits without valuing purpose will end up with poor customer service and unhappy employees.
