COURSE OVERVIEW

The Product Owner who drives value, not just the backlog

The Product Owner role is widely misunderstood. Writing user stories and managing the backlog is the surface of it. The real accountability is bridging business strategy and product execution — maximising the value of the work a Scrum Team does, Sprint after Sprint. This course is where that shift happens: from project thinking to product thinking, from task management to outcome ownership.

DAY 1

Product Ownership fundamentals

Day 1 focuses on the Product Owner’s accountability in Scrum — the shift from project to product mindset, what it means to maximise value, and how to connect business strategy to the Product Goal and Sprint Goal. Includes product vision, stakeholder collaboration, and backlog fundamentals.

DAY 2

Agile product management in practice

Day 2 moves from theory to application — empiricism as a decision-making tool, forecasting and release planning, ROI and value measurement, and how to engage stakeholders effectively. You leave with practices you can use on Monday.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

PSPO I is the Scrum.org foundation certification for Product Owners

Issued by Scrum.org — founded by Scrum co-creator Ken Schwaber. Assessment covers the Product Owner’s accountabilities and the application of Scrum to maximise product value. 85% pass mark.

What's included

Your question won't be in the textbook. Your trainer's answer shouldn't be either.

The Product Owner role sits at the intersection of business strategy, customer insight, and delivery reality. ZXM trainers have worked with Product Owners in federal government, financial services, and large enterprise — in organisations where accountability for value was genuinely contested and the backlog was a political document as much as a product one. Every case in the classroom is drawn from that experience.

ZXM’s lead trainers — Matt and Mia — are the only two trainers in Australia to hold both Scrum.org PST and SAFe SPC6 credentials.

REVIEWS

What participants say

"Very collaborative learning classroom atmosphere when Mia and Matt explained the theories and also brief explanation on how it applies into the real world which is very helpful. Also, providing information on what is considered outdates in the today's world and provide insight on what can work instead on our workplace."
Paulito Cardeno
"Such an awesome, practical course. Matt and Mia really got into the detail and made this relevant for our company. I am super thankful for their skill to describe various concepts. Matt's insight was valuable; Mia's time-management was also spot-on. I had hoped for more time to ask questions, but Matt offered me a meeting online to run through the questions I had after the course."
Katrina Nicolas
"Super knowledgably, experienced and enthusiastic trainers. Learned a lot in two days which will help me for the rest of my career, wish I'd done this course 5 years ago! "
