Consultant Product Owner - Canberra Australia

Full Time. Permanent. $200K+ AUD package, based on your experience.

Do you have a passion for optimising value of delivery? Are you fabulous at stakeholder engagement, commercial discussions with customers, and managing Product Backlogs?
Would you like to drive real change in some of the most challenging scaled agile environments in the Asia-Pacific?

What we're looking for

Zen Ex Machina (ZXM) is looking for a Product Owner Consultant in Canberra Australia, to lead one of our Consultant Scrum Teams.

What does the role look like?

Everyone at ZXM has three jobs, even our Product Owners.

Consultant

You'll be helping clients solve their agile problems. This will include sales, stakeholder engagement, sales, and deliver management using Scrum through the Product Backlog, as well as agile coaching.

Team Member

You'll be working and collaborating as part of a Scrum Team of consultants across different sites. You'll work side-by-side with a Scrum Master to manage delivery.

Thought Leader

You'll be demonstrating agile thought leadership by writing blog posts, presenting at conferences, and demonstrating to others inside ZXM and to clients what it means to be truly agile.

What experience do I need?

Deep, applied, agile experience

You must have experience as a Product Owner in a commercial setting. You must have 10+ years of deep, applied, agile experience. You must be a thought leader in the community.

Commercial acumen

You must have experience managing budgets of $2M+, writing proposals, and engaging in sales conversations with C-level executives and middle managers on agile.

Lead the team

As the Product Owner, you will lead the team by optimising the value of consultant work for ZXM and its clients through the Product Backlog.

Get "hands on"

We're not looking for agile deliver managers or project managers. This is a Product Owner role. You must have 10+ years experience as a Product Owner with experience in large scale agile environments. You'll be teaching and coaching other program-level delivery agile practitioners.

Understand government in Canberra

You need to have an understanding of the machinery of government, APS culture, and the challenges of creating change within a traditional corporate management hierarchy. If you're an EL2 with agile experience then this role might be for you.

Quality

We have a reputation for a very high standard of work. You'll need to be precise and up-to-date in your agile terminology, be able to write to team-level and executive audiences, and work to a very high Definition of Done for consultant deliverables like reports and proposals.

What we expect from you

  • A strong reputation, and high standing, in the local and national agile community.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to agile by living our values.
  • An agile mindset, appreciating the benefit of constants, iterations, and continuous improvement.
  • A learning mindset, engaging in self-directed learning as part of your professional development.

In this role you will get to

  • Lead the creation of a world-class agile culture with our clients.
  • Work under some of the most experienced and well-known agile practitioners in Australia.
  • Teach, coach, train and mentor teams, programs and their leadership to be agile.
  • Work hands-on with client teams to help them understand their agile needs, and then plan and implement improvements to their agile capability maturity through ZXM’s Consultant Scrum Team.
  • Contribute to and write reports to executive and senior management audiences to communicate the effectiveness of our agile coaching.
  • Lead aspects of ZXM’s internal operations, including sales and proposals, posting on social media, developing internal IP, presenting at conferences, and organising local meetups.

What will ZXM be looking for in my LinkedIn profile?

We’re looking for people with deep, applied agile experience with a focus on being a Product Owner.

If you’ve only got experience serving as an organisational leader in a capacity other than as a coach, and serving as a solo Scrum Trainer in a classroom setting without a specific client focus, then this isn’t the experience we’re looking for.

  • 10+ years’ experience leading agile delivery in an agile role using Scrum, Lean and/or Kanban frameworks and associated industry best practices.
  • 7+ years’ experience in consulting a consulting firm – with a focus on IT strategy, technology or business.
  • 7+ years’ experience in one or more of the following roles: Product Owner, SAFe® Product Manager, Chief Product Owner managing budgets of $2M+ AUD.
  • Demonstrated experience in driving agile transformations from design to implementation, particularly from the perspective of organisational, psychological and behavioural change.
  • Demonstrated success in delivering and facilitating small scale workshops, facilitation and/or formal training.
  • Certifications from Scrum.org, Scrum Alliance, and SAFe®, and demonstrated experience in their associated roles, are highly desirable.

We’re looking for people with deep, applied agile coaching experience. Serving as an organisational leader in another capacity than as coach, and serving as a solo Scrum Trainer in a classroom setting without a specific client focus, does not count as agile coaching experience.

About our team

What does working as a Product Owner with a ZXM Consultant Scrum Team look like?

Love a challenge

The team never shy away from hard work. Change is hard. Change at scale is even harder. Seniors help juniors by working in a Scrum Team of consultants.

Work to change workplace behaviour

Our goal is to improve people's way of working, not improve our egos and embed ourselves permanently into a client site.

Always learning

Agile is always changing, so whether its formal learning or researching new techniques, the team is always growing its knowledge.

Work at scale

The ZXM team works across dozens of client teams. There's no "my team". They triage issues and tackle them through working to a backlog.

About our benefits

To support you at work (and play) we offer some great perks: up to 5 weeks off to relax and recharge, an annual allowance to support your learning and growth, a mobile data allowance, a laptop to support mobility across multiple client sites and discounts on Scrum.org certification.

We're serious about diversity

We believe that people’s unique contributions drive ZXM’s success. This is why we never discriminate on the basis of race, religion, national origin, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, age, or marital, veteran, or physical or mental disability status. We’re stronger together.
